Award Categories

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  Media
This award is to be presented to the individual(s) or organizations in the print or broadcasting industry who have communicated heart healthy messages in a unique and effective manner.

  Workplaces
This award is designed to recognize individual(s) or organizations (private or public sector) who have been instrumental in promoting heart healthy messages to their fellow employees by implementing programs and/or initiating workplace policy changes.

  Grocery Stores
This award is to be presented to the individual store or food outlet chain which promotes low fat products, high fiber foods, and heart healthy information in various ways to consumers and staff. This can include promotional flyers, in-store signage, and taste test opportunities.

  Restaurants
This award is to be presented to food service providers or restaurant owners who have provided healthy eating choices and 100% smoke-free environment in their establishments. These individuals can also be recognized for their ability to ensure that staff and chefs are provided with up to date information and training about heart healthy choices.

  Health Care Settings
This award will be presented to individual(s) or organizations (private or public sector) that have been instrumental in promoting heart health through prevention initiatives. Nominations could include private doctor’s practices, community health services, hospitals, community care facilities, and other allied health professionals.

  Schools and Camps
This award will be presented to a school or a camp who has reached children and youth with heart healthy messages. Nominations could include elementary, middle, and secondary schools, universities and colleges. The camp sector may include day camps, after school programs, and residential camps sponsored by municipal, private, religious, or community agencies.

  Community at Large
This award will recognize individual(s) or organizations in Ottawa who have made a significant contribution to the promotion of a heart healthy lifestyle through the delivery of education and skill building programs and/or by creating environmental supports which contribute to a heart healthy community. Nominations could include community programs, local service groups, churches, non-governmental organizations, or other groups not considered in the other Heart Beat Award categories.

  The Heart Healthy Hero
This award is designed to honour an individual who has contributed to the advancement of heart health for themselves, family, friends, or co-workers. Nominations could include “personal success stories” and community leaders.

  Heart beat Honour Roll
All people nominated for the 2005 Heart Beat Awards will have their names included on a Heart Beat Honour Roll to recognize the importance of their contribution in this area.
