Save a Life Symposium 2007
The Regional Heart Saver Committee held their annual symposium on Saturday November 4, 2007. The keynote speakers were Dr. Justin Maloney, Sandra Clarke and David Elhadad. They gave insight into pre-hospital issues, the ACT foundation and legal issues pertaining to resuscitation respectively. The concurrent sessions featured Joe Micucci (Ottawa Paramedic Services) presenting on the PAD program and Barbara Ellis (Ottawa Public Health) presenting on Communicable Diseases. Lastly, Dr. Ken Welburn (Ottawa Anxiety and Trauma Clinic) topped off the day with his presentation "First Responders: Post Traumatic Stress."

Save a Life Symposium 2006
Our annual Save-A-Life Symposium was held on Saturday November 4, 2006 at Ottawa City Hall. Dr. Grant Stotts (Neurologist) and Maureen Murdock of the Champlain Regional Stroke Centre presented on Secondary Prevention and Acute Care Management of Stroke and on the Regional Stroke Program. Dr. Justin Maloney gave an update on the Base Hospital and Dr. Christian Vaillancourt presented on a new study process and updated us on his research at the Ottawa Health Research Institute. There were also concurrent sessions on the new CPR changes, stroke in children and the legal issues in resuscitation. Lastly, the panel on the Chain of Survival generated good discussion.
Save A Life Symposium 2005
Our annual Save A Life Symposium was held Saturday November 5, 2005 at Ottawa City Hall. Dr. Christian Vaillancourt provided some insight into the process for establishing guidelines for CPR in his presentation entitled, "Does Research Support CPR?" Dr. Justin Maloney provided an insightful E.C.C. update and interpreted local data from the Ottawa Base Hospital report for 2004. Once again this year, dispatch assisted CPR sparked interest with those in attendance and generated many questions from the audience.

Ottawa Scientists publish first statistics on
cardiac arrest survival rates across Canada.
The team of researchers, led by Ottawa
Health Research Institute Scientist Dr.
Christian Vaillancourt, looked at a number of
important factors, most notably: number of
cardiac arrests, survival rates, emergency
response times, use of defibrillators and
bystander CPR.

A Regional Heart Saver Committee Meeting is held the first Thursday of
every month, and visitors are always welcome to attend. In addition to
our meetings, we schedule CPR and first aid training and host a CPR Symposium.
