Children's performance at school can be influenced by a number of factors, among which what children eat and how active they are during the school day. The Healthy School Lunch program addresses nutrition as one of these factors. This three-pronged program provides grade four teachers with all they need to promote healthy eating: 1) a comprehensive teaching manual with lesson plans for fun in-class activities 2) complementary nutrition resources for the students and 3) nutrition resources for the parents.

Physical Activity for Young Families:
Active Play Every Day!
Parents are powerful influencers in their children's lives. If being active is valued by their parent(s), children will learn to value being active as well. Children who have the opportunity and support to be active on a regular basis benefit both physically, mentally and socially. Families can help their children to develop a healthy active lifestyle by creating a family routine that includes regular physical activity. It can be as easy as an after dinner walk on a daily basis, or going to a 'parent and child swim' at the local pool together.
Active Play Every Day! is an initiative that is aimed at helping children learn the importance of being active and eating healthy. Active Play Every Day! kits that include activities, games, and resource information regarding physical activity and healthy eating have been disseminated through Ottawa Early Years Centres.
